There is something fun about a fizzy drink that is pink or red in color. I think the color makes me feel like a kid and the bubbles tickle my nose! When I was a kid and we went out for a “fancy” dinner, my parents would let my sister and I order a Shirley Temple. This classic drink is a non-alcoholic mixed drink traditionally made with ginger ale, a splash of grenadine and garnished with a maraschino cherry. My sister and I would order 2 and pretend to be drinking a real grown up cocktail! As an adult, I have not lost that love for the drink of my childhood, but I have doctored it to be an adult alcoholic version, called a Dirty Shirley Cocktail.
What I love about this Dirty Shirley Cocktail, as I do with many recipes I post, is you can change it to fit your taste. If you don’t have vodka, add tequila or gin to your Dirty Shirley Cocktail. If you don’t have grenadine, add cranberry juice like I did. If you don’t have maraschino cherries (I didn’t) then garnish with whatever you have. I had fresh blackberries, and they were perfect for the summer inspired drink!
Ingredients
- 1 oz vodka
- 5 – 6 oz lemon lime soda or club soda
- 1 dash grenadine syrup
- *splash of Cranberry Juice (optional)
- *squeeze of lemon
Instructions
- Pour the vodka over ice cubes in a highball glass. Fill the glass the rest of the way with Sprite. Add grenadine, garnish and serve. I add just a splash of cranberry juice to mine, but this is totally optional.
