I have been making food for the past few days to get ready for the 4th of July holoday. My husband has the day off and I think a day at the lake will be wonderfully relaxing! I wanted to make some fun foods for the kids to eat as well. Nothing says holiday food or kid friendly food like hot dogs, right? My kids love it when I make one of their favorite fun foods; Firecracker Hot Dogs.
These Firecracker Hot Dogs are so easy to make!. My son loves to eat hot dogs, but I cannot cook them on the grill. He doesn’t care for the grill marks. That makes these Firecracker Hot Dogs perfect for Henry because I bake them in the oven! Henry LOVES these Firecracker Hot Dogs! He said they are super fun to eat! SO for my family, we have a win-win here!
For making the star shaped cheese, I used a star cookie cutter. You can either buy a block of cheese or have the deli slice some thicker slices of cheese. If you try to use the cookie cutter on a thinner slice of cheese, they won’t stay on the wooden skewers.

Two great 4th of July treats that go great with these Firecracker Hot Dogs are my Layered 4th of July Jello Shots and Patriotic No Bake Mini Cheesecakes. These really round out the patriotic food theme for your holiday table!
Say Cheeeeeeeese! When you are making your cheese stars, be sure to make plenty. For some reason, mine kept disappearing before I could get them on the top of the Firecracker Hot Dogs! The kids really love snacking on cheese, and I don’t mind at all! I mean, who wouldn’t love to eat a few cheese stars?!
Ingredients
- 16 wooden skewers
- 16 hot dogs
- 16 pieces of refrigerated breadstick dough
- 8 1/4″ thick slices of colby jack cheese (you should be able to get 2 stars from each slice)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375. Line cookie/baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking sheet
- Insert skewers through all of the hot dogs, leaving about 1/2″ exposed at the top for the cheese
- Take one piece of the bread stick dough and wrap around one hot dog. Start at the bottom and circle towards the top. Repeat for the remaining hot dogs.
- Place wrapped dogs on the baking sheet and place in oven, baking according to the breadstick directions.
- While the hot dogs are baking, take a small star shaped cookie cutter and cut out your cheese stars.
- Once the hot dogs are done, cool slightly and stick a cheese star on the top.
