This is a sponsored post. All opinions are 100% mine. **Warning** This post includes images and content about a cleverly written show on Netflix which may be scary to younger readers. Please proceed with caution if you are under 13! I have a twisted sense of humor. Always have. Always will. I love dark humor. I love cerebral humor. If you can make me laugh and think at the same time, you have me hooked. That is how the new Netflix show, The Santa Clarita Diet was for me. It is funny, the writing is some of the best I have ever seen and the cast has a chemistry that is rarely seen.
The show, which is a Netflix original, stars Drew Barrymore and Timothy Olyphant. They play Sheila and Joel Hammond. The are realtors, raising their teenage daughter Abby in Santa Clarita, California. They live in a typical suburban neighborhood. They live between Rick, a sheriff and Dan., a cop. They have an on going competition on whose job is the best of the two. Rick is played beautifully by Richard T. Jones (Narcos and American Horror Story Hotel. Dan is played with the smarmy aplomb of Ricardo Chavira. You will recognize him from Desperate Housewives.
All is well for the Hammonds until Sheila goes through an unusual transformation. I will rip the bandaid off here. Sheila becomes the undead. They don’t know how or why. One minute she vomits so much, it covers an entire bathroom, and the next, she has no heartbeat and is craving meat. Raw meat. OK, raw meat of people. OK, there, I said it. She eats people! Ad she feels AMAZING! Here is where the show shifts from your typical “zombie” themed show. Being the devoted family the Hammonds are, they support Sheila in her new undead status.
With the help of Dan’s long suffering stepson, Eric, played by Skyler Gisondo, the Hammonds find a way to live with Sheila’s situation. Let me tell you. Keep an eye on this kid. He is going to be a popular actor. He plays the part of Eric with such awkward geekiness. But at the same time, he is a bit debonair about it. Adults want to adopt him and your daughter will want to date him. Your son may want to give him a wedgie, but will immediately feel bad about it and make Eric his BFF. But I digress.
What I love most about this show is the layers of story lines and the characters. You cannot help but sheer for Sheila, Joel and Abby to make this undead thing work for them. Joel, being the protective and devoted husband he is, won’t let Sheila go out and look for food on her own. And while they are finding Sheila her next meal, Abby and Eric are busy too. They are building and trying to define their new relationship. They are also working to find a cure for Sheila’s problem. The result of this is one funny as hell show that is a little bloody, a little gory and a lot addictive!
In the show, Sheila realizes she cannot munch on some guy’s finger (a little mid-day snack!) anytime she wants. So she puts them in her blender and makes herself a smoothie! The girls on the blog cannot gt over Sheila’s energy. She always has her smoothie bottle as she takes her daily walk with Rick and Dan’s wives. Little do they know she is sipping on some dead guy she and Joel killed last night! T=So, to celebrate the show, I decided to make a Netflix Santa Clarita Diet Zombie Smoothie. This smoothie is a great way to get your day started. You can take it with you on your morning walks. Don’t you love my blender bottle? A dead guy’s fingers are optional!
