I come from a family of pet lovers. We always had 1-2 of dogs and the same number of cats. When I grew up and moved out, I lived in small, one bedroom apartments that only allowed cats. So, needless to say, I have been a cat person for most of my life. We have adopted or rescued many cats over the past 30 years! Our most recent rescues are Meep and Hazel, who we have had for over 5 years.

Save money and make these DIY room deodorizers! I use fresh fruit and flowers in this easy to make craft. These homemade potpourri sachet bags smell amazing!

We live in a small 3 bedroom house and there are not many places we could hide the litter box. We have it in our small bathroom, so anyone who uses the restroom cannot help but notice it. Because we live in such small quarters, we needed to find a cat little that would take care of the odors.

With two adult cats, the smell can be overwhelming. We tried many brands until we found Cat’s Pride®. We have been using the Cat’s Pride® Fresh & Light Ultimate Care® Scented Multi-Cat Scoop Litter and we could not be happier!

Let’s face it; Cats are complicated. Great litter is simple! With the Fresh & Light Ultimate Care from Cat’s Pride, we get the strongest clumps with low dust and tracking. This is super important to us because we have such a tight space where the little box is located. With just inches between the cat box and the bathroom door, the low tracking is a huge selling point for us. When I learned Cat’s Pride has been creating great cat litter for over 50 years, I was not surprised.

I have a bad back, so lifting a heavy container of cat litter is not going to happen for me. That means I have to wait for my husband to come home from work to clean the cat box. How excited do you think he is to come home from a long day and jump into that chore! Well with the Cat’s Pride Fresh & Light Ultimate Care, I can handle their *50% lighter litter container at just 10 pounds! (*See packaging for details.) With our old litter, you could tell we had cats the moment you walked into the house. With Fresh & Light Ultimate Care, I can get **10+ day odor control & powerful absorption (**Based on laboratory testing, when used as directed.)

We purchase our Fresh & Light Ultimate Care from our local Walmart. You can find the litter in the Scented Multi-Cat Scoop Litter, which we use, as well as the Hypoallergenic Unscented Multi-Cat Scoop Litter. I was so happy to know Cat’s Pride® has partnered with the Jason Debus Heigl Foundation™ which helps end the needless suffering of animals. When you purchase your Fresh & Light Ultimate Care, a portion of every sale supports the Foundation and their mission to end animal cruelty. Cat’s Pride® also partners with and supports the American Humane Association. Are you excited to try the Fresh & Light Ultimate Care products? My mom used to make homemade potpourri and sachet bags. She would put them in our drawers, the boys gym bags and even the glove box in the car. I make those same sachet bags filled with my own homemade potpourri. I even put them where my mom put hers! And they are so easy to make! Here’s how!

All you need to make your homemade potpourri and sachet bag is:

  • Fresh Fruit
  • Fresh Flowers
  • Fresh Herbs
  • Fabric
  • Ribbon
  • Fabric Glue
  • Measuring Tape
  • Pencil
  • Buttons
  • Scissors

Step 1: Dry your fruit, flowers and herbs. Lay them out on a paper towel and set the microwave to 5 minutes at 30% power. Be sure to pick off the petals of the flowers and herbs and slice your fruit thin. If your potpourri is not dry after 5 minutes, set the microwave for 1 minute at 30%. Repeat as necessary. Set aside.

How To Make Homemade Potpourri And Sachet Bags measure

Step 2: Measure your fabric. I cut mine to be 18″ tall and 6″ wide. Fold your fabric. With your fabrics pattern facing up, fold in half, making the pattern sides meet. Now your fabric should measure 9″ by 6″.

How To Make Homemade Potpourri And Sachet Bags Gluing

Step 3: Using your fabric glue, glue each of the long sides together. Now you have the left and right sides glued and the fold at the bottom leaving the top open.  Allow glue to dry completely before moving to step #4.

Step 4: Fill the bag with your potpourri, about 2/3 full.

Step 5: Close the bag with your ribbon.

Step 6: Using our fabric glue, apply a button to the middle of the bow on your ribbon.

Step 7: Allow glue to dry from Step 6 and you are ready to use your new homemade potpourri and sachet bags!

What flowers/herbs/fruits would you use in your homemade potpourri and where would you put your sachet bags?

I have sachets in most of my dresser drawers. I love the idea of making them myself 🙂

I love my pets, but I certainly don’t want my guests to smell them. It sounds like you found a great product that hides the odor & won’t hurt your back.

I love this idea!! This sounds like a great cat litter, we have a cat as well and live in a smaller house so hiding the litter box is a problem as well for us.

I love how easy those sachet bags are to make! I have two cats, and that means we buy more than one jug of cat litter at a time. We’ve never tried the light kind, so now’s the time. Thanks for your tutorial! #client

I remember finding potpourri sachet bags in the dressers at my grandmother’s house. This sure does bring back memories. I love lilacs and I would place one in my linen closet. And I love that this cat litter is so much lighter. Those containers can be quite heavy.

I made similar sachets with my grandma when I was little, so these are taking me back. I would love to make them with my own kiddos.

My Mom used to make little sachet bags to put in the dresser drawers to keep the clothes smelling fresh. I will have to make a few.
