What are some of your favorite parts of being a parent or grandparent? For me, it was seeing my baby reach the milestones in their lives.
These are things most kids do by a certain age. This includes how they play, learn, speak, behave, and move, like crawling, walking, or jumping. Chelsea walked at 10 months, Caitlin at 12 months and Henry at almost 18 months. Here is a quick checklist how to recognize and develop milestones in your toddler:
12 Months: At this age, your child has acquired several skills. They are probably saying mama, dada and trying to mimic words you say. They are able to pull themselves up unassisted and may be talking a few steps on their own.
They are able to do simple tasks like wave goodbye, hold a small ball and follow simple directions. They can drink from a cup, put things in and take them out of a container. They may have a favorite books and hand it to you when they want you to read it.
At this age, give your child lots of affection. They love hugs and kisses. Speak to your child by building onto what they can say. If they say “ball”, you can say, “That is a round red ball. Watch it bounce.” Also, as you go about your day, tell your child what you are doing.
Say, “Mommy is mopping the floor. Mommy is brushing her hair, etc.” This is the age your child will want to bang a drum or play a toy piano. Read to your child often. This encourages their language development.
18 Months: Your child is getting more social, but may be afraid of new people. They will throw tantrums! The terrible two’s are on the way! This is a toddler milestone that keeps you on your toes. They should be able to say several single words and may be able to put 2-3 words together.
They also love to say NO! Can play pretend like feeding a doll. They can point to body parts and may be able to say a few of their names, like arm and leg. They can walk up and down steps and run. They can undress themselves and hold a fork and spoon. They can hold a chunky crayon or piece of chalk.
Praise your child for their good behavior. Continue to read to your child. Ask them to point to certain items in the book. Give them balls, puzzles, and blocks to play with. Describe their emotions. When they smile, say, “You are happy when you take your bath.”
