5 Fun Ways To Beat The Heat And DIY Sponge Bomb Tutorial

December 27, 2019 by Kelly 58 Comments

This post contains affiliate links and/or images. I live in the south and this summer has been unusually humid! I am not kidding when I tell you it will make your mascara run! To get the kids outside, I found 5 Fun Ways To Beat The Heat And DIY Sponge Bomb Tutorial.

5 Fun Ways To Beat The Heat And DIY Sponge Bomb Tutorial

My kids are nerds, so if given the choice, they will stay inside and play video games, watch Netflix or listen to music. I am OK with that since it has been so beastly hot.

When it gets closer to dinner time, they get a little restless and bored and want to venture outside. Because it is still pretty hot at that time, I keep a jar filled with fun ways to beat the heat for them.

The summer heat can be brutal and so can the kid's boredom! Here's 5 fun ideas to beat the heat and DIY Sponge Bombs craft

5 Fun Ways For Kids To Beat The Heat

Body Painting: Put the kids in their bathing suits and hand them finger paints. Let them paint each other and rinse off with the hose or sprinkler after!

5 Fun Ways To Beat The Heat And DIY Sponge Bomb Tutorial

Water Gun Marco Polo: I think this is a brilliant twist on having a water gun fight. Blindfold the person with the gun and they will say “Marco” while the other kids say “Polo” and the gunman shoots at them! The first one hit is “It.”

Water Slide: Get out the tarp and the hose and make your own water slide. We have hills in our yard to make this especially fun!

Bobbing For Apples: This popular game is usually played in the fall, but why wait? Fill a large container with cold water and apples and let the kids go crazy trying to catch that elusive apple!

Water Sponge Bombs: These are super easy to make (the kids made ours, so it doubled as an indoor activity) and more fun than water balloons. These are 5 Fun Ways To Beat The Heat And DIY Sponge Bomb Tutorial that are epic!

DIY Water Sponge Bombs

The kids have had the most fun with these water sponge bombs this summer! As I said, they are easy to make. Because we found the sponges at the Dollar Store, the craft cost less than $10 to make a bucketful of them. Here are the instructions:

How to make them:

Cut 3 sponges into thirds, lengthwise. Stack the 9 pieces and pinch them in the center together. Wrap or tie as tightly as you can around the middle and shape them into a ball. Repeat for as many water sponge bombs as you like. We made a dozen.

Water Fight!!

Next, you just fill a bucket with water and let the kids have a Water Sponge Bomb fight! My kids played with these for hours at a time. I love this was so cheap and easy and had such a high enjoyment factor!

Get Wet To Beat The Heat

This was a total win-win for the whole family! We pitted the boys against the girls. It was Caitlin and me against Henry and my husband. Sadly, Caitlin and I were annihilated!

But hey, we got wet and had a blast! After we dried off, we had a drink and a snack. The adults had a  Grilled Peach and Brown Sugar Bourbon Iced Tea and the kids had theirs without the alcohol. They went great with my  Watermelon Rice Krispie Treats!

What fun ways to beat the heat do you and your family participate in?

Water play is a favorite among my son and his friends. We happened upon a fun water event at the Children’s Museum when we visited friends in Pennsylvania recently.
Now that my son is getting more familiar in the pool we’ll have to try these sponges & Marco Polo!

oh man I haven’t been on a waterslide since I was a kid, I think I would like to the grown up version of it at The Atlantis in Paradise Island! I have a funny feeling my nephews would like this craft, but since they would probably aim the ‘sponge bombs’ at their moms I would get in trouble for giving them the idea! LOL
