I have lost several family members to a heart attack or from complications of the heart. As a kid, heart disease was not on my radar, but as I have gotten older it sure is. Have your doctor run a complete blood panel. This will tell you if you have or are at risk for any major health problems. If you are, you and your doctor can create a plan to get your health on track.
- Lower Your Risks: Many of us have a vice or two hiding in the closet. Mine was smoking. When my kids were born, I quit, cold turkey. Stop any form of tobacco use, including dipping. Second hand smoke can also put you at risk. Alcoholism runs in my family. My doctor said this could have played a major role in my family members dying so young. Obesity is another risk factor. I am more than 50 pounds overweight. My doctor said losing just 10 pounds can lower my risk.
- Diet: It is no surprise where that extra 50 pounds I have been carrying came from. For years, my food intake has been crap! I ate a lot of sweets, carbs and fast food. My doctor said making small changes in my diet could add up to a big payoff. Now, I prep my meals once a week. This allows me to have healthy choices at my fingertips.
